What’s It All About?
The book is about learning shapes and colors. The idea came to me and I ran with it. If there is one thing I have learned while working with children, it’s that they often appreciate sheer silliness! This book is about presenting shapes and colors to children, but it is also taking time to laugh at the silliness of my cat as different shapes.
Lessons for Children and Adults
Practice your shapes and colors, and take time to laugh! This book isn’t really about the lessons. The one lesson that could be taken from this is for parents. It can be tempting to want every reading experience to be about learning. If your child isn’t interested in naming all of the shapes and colors in the book, don’t force it. One very good way to ruin reading time is to force it to be something. If your child just wants to read, look at the pictures, and laugh at my less than stellar drawing skills, go with it!
Shape Activities
Fun with Shapes
You got to see my cat take on many different shapes, now you can try it! One fun activity you can try is to make your own shapes. Can you make yourself into a circle? How about a triangle? If you have a group of children, you can have them work together to make themselves into shapes.
Find a Shape
You can play a game with children to have them find you different shapes. If you want, you can also add colors for an additional challenge. Either have them point to different shapes, or have them find an object and bring it to you. For example you can ask them to find you an object with a red circle. They could find a red ball, or they could find a red cap. Yes, the ball is a sphere, but unless you are dealing with an advanced child, we’ll go with it.
Make Those Around You Into Shapes
You can turn your own friends, family members, and pets into shapes! Simply start out with the shape and have your child draw them as the shape. This will most likely be entertaining as your child figures out where to put arms and legs to fit them within the bounds of the shape. Not only can you work with shapes, you can be very entertained by what they come up with.
Shape Games
Another fun thing you can do with shapes is play a game. Simply cut out several different shapes out of colorful paper. Then you can make things out of the shapes and encourage each other to guess what you made. For example, a square with a triangle on top of it, could be used to make a house.
In Conclusion
This story is meant to be fun! It’s okay if your child is more interested in laughing at the silly looking pictures and not so interested in naming all of the shapes. It’s okay if they aren’t in the mood to name the colors. If they are, it can be a good chance to practice, if they aren’t, it’s a good chance to just have fun!
