What’s It All About?
Honestly, this book was just inspired by the time my cat Z was sleeping with her face in a cup. There’s really not that much more to it. My other cat Ike is much better at hiding. We’ve found him inside of drawers, on top of the refrigerator, and tucked up in cupboards. Each page shows Z hiding really terribly, and Ike doing a much better job of hiding. Each page gives a chance to laugh at where Z tried to hide and try to find Ike. No, there is not much challenge to it. This is just a fun and silly book. If I was better at drawing, I could have made it more of a challenge…
Lessons for Children and Adults
Be better at hiding? Honestly, I don’t know that there is a lesson to this one. Not all stories need a lesson, some can just be about cats hiding badly. If you can think of a lesson, go with it!
Fun Activities
Discuss the Hiding
Obviously this book is no “Where’s Waldo”. This book is meant to be funny. Z is obviously bad at hiding, Ike, the other cat, is much better at hiding. Depending on the age of your child, they may not have much trouble finding both cats. You can take time to discuss why the hiding choices were bad, who is better at hiding, and have them tell you where the best places for each cat to hide would be in the place you are reading from.
Classic Hide and Seek
There is an obvious activity that goes hand in hand with this book, hide and seek! You can take turns hiding, or let your child hide and find them.
Stuffed Animal Hide and Seek
There are only so many places that a grown adult can hide in a house. Contorting your body to fit into that cabinet may just not be possible anymore. An alternative to the classic game with living humans is a version with stuffed animals. You can have one person act as the seeker. Each other person in the game will get a stuffed animal. They will hide their stuffed animal somewhere in the defined area for the game. The seeker must find all of the hidden animals.
In Conclusion
This book is meant to be silly and fun. If I were better at drawing, I would have made the settings more elaborate, but what can you do?
